Heartworm Awareness

heartworm awarenessThroughout this country, Heartworms in pets are a common disease.  Cats and dogs alike are at a high risk on the East Coast due to the humid, hot weather in which mosquitoes thrive.  They are the most damaging parasites and 100% preventable.

Heartworms are a parasitic worm that live in the heart and pulmonary arteries of an infected pet and travel through the bloodstream.  These damaging parasites harm vital organs and arteries once in the bloodstream and their destination is to the heart and lung vessels.  It takes approximately 6 months after an infection but, can survive in your pet for 5-7 years.

Although this disease is serious and deadly, it is easily preventable with an inexpensive topical or chewable pill.  This is available only with a veterinarian’s prescription and is administered monthly.  If your furry friend is a cat, they must undergo a screening be a Heartworm preventative is administered.  Contrary to cats, dogs can be given a Heartworm preventative under the age of 6 months without a blood test.  Adult dogs must be screened for Heartworms prior to starting on the medication.
